Parallels Workstation: an important tip

I didn’t find this when searching, and the Parallels site has no user support forum that I could find, so I’ll just post it here:

I’m running Windows inside of a window on my Mac (sometimes you need to test things in Internet Explorer) using Parallels Workstation, and I had some trouble with Windows running slowly (or “slow” for you search engine visitors) after I increased the memory available to the virtual machine.

Before you increase the memory for a particular virtual machine, you first have to go into Preferences and increase the reserved memory limit for Parallels itself, and then increase the memory options for your virtual machine instance. In other words:

Step 1

set memory limit for Parallels Workstation

Step 2

set memory limit for virtual machine

Apologies to longtime re-run visitors who don’t come to the site for tech support. I’m just trying to help out my fellow slow Windows sufferers.
