Movies of the '80s

I go to the movies a lot. But back in the 1980s, when I was not self-sufficient, and had no transportation, I was restricted to only a few a year. That didn’t stop me from being exposed to them, of course, what with TV commercials and product tie-ins and music videos and soundtrack albums and reviews in the newspaper, etc.

I thought it would be fun to compile a list of some popular ’80s movies that I missed, and construct a summary description of them, based solely on what I remember from my childhood:

About Last Night

Demi Moore drinks coffee with some people in her kitchen.

Hannah and Her Sisters

Dull people have endless conversations.

Mommie Dearest

Shirley Maclaine freaks out over nothing.

On Golden Pond

Dull people have endless conversations.

Out of Africa

Some people leave Africa.

Purple Rain

Prince rides a motorcycle through a concrete structure of some type.

Diner

Dull people have endless conversations.

Against All Odds

A woman kisses a bearded man on the beach. Forever.

Drugstore Cowboy

I have no idea what happens in this movie.

Blue Velvet

I’ve actually seen this, and I can’t tell you what happens in it.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a woman.

St. Elmo’s Fire

Someone’s gonna be a man in motion.

The Color Purple

A woman sits in a chair in the dark.

Ishtar

Don’t be ridiculous. Nobody’s ever seen “Ishtar”.

  1. Golden Pond
Very old dull people have endless conversations, with an occasional boating accident.

    Driving Miss Daisy
Dull Southern people grow old and have endless conversations.

    American Ninja
Michael Dudikoff reminds us that Americans can still beat the Japanese at something.

  2. I say “au contraire” to you comment about Ishtar. An aside – did you know the French have no word for “au contraire”? But if they did, they’d say “au contraire, monsieur re-run, the Yahoo group ILoveIshtar has 46 fanatic members.

This 20th anniversary year is going to be a great year for Ishtar…
There is a documentary film about Ishtar fandom in the works, the manager of the Ishtar fan website (http://www.ishtarthemovie.com/) is putting together a tribute CD featuring cover versions of songs from the movie, and possibly a US release on DVD (something the heathen in Europe have been enjoying for years – Ishtar on DVD is one thing the French DO have!). So shake off that square world, get with the countdown, and blast off to Ishtar!

  3. I’ve seen Ishtar. Twice. What I remember:

Dustin Hoffman is in the desert, and at one point he has an RPG.
