Is it getting better, or do you feel the same?
So, I came into the living room after waking up to see my wife was watching a music video. It was a black and white affair with a woman I’d never seen before singing in front of what looked like U2.
A few more seconds went by, and the tune sounded familiar. I paid close attention to a few lyrics and came to the shocking conclusion that was, in fact, “One” by U2, from back in 1992.
So, near as I can figure, Mary J. Blige (I waited around for the credits) wanted to do a cover of “One” but instead of sampling the original song like most Rap or R&B artists would do, she hired the band to play the song that they originally made famous while she sang on top of them.
The point of a cover is to interpret the song in your own style. Mary’s version of “One” is not a cover of a song. It’s just very expensive karaoke.
…of a song that wasn’t very good in the first place.
