Waiting for breakfast the other day, I was perusing the bottled water display and one of the brands was advertising itself as "alpine." And it occurred to me, for the very first time, that "alpine" refers to a quality one might find in the Alps, and was not, as I had previously assumed throughout my suburban childhood, only the name of a car sound system manufacturer.
