Archives by date

I’ve been making some tweaks to re-run, primarily in the background. Hopefully all the feeds still work. If you read this site via a feed, and you don’t see this entry, there’s a problem.

Also, what do you think about the fact that re-run has no date-based archive? Here’s an example:

near endless list of months

I don’t like cluttered interfaces (not that Alex’s web site is cluttered, per se, it was just a convenient example) and the way I figure it, if you’re looking for something in the past, you’re more likely to remember some searchable terms than you are which month and year it happened.

If you just want to idly flip through the history, I do have that “Older” link at the bottom of each page, so I think I’ve got all the angles covered. Thoughts?

  1. Tag it with November, 2006, etc… and search based on the tags.

  2. I would be more likely to search through keywords or terms than click through an archives sidebar.

  3. most times, i do use the archive sidebar. but i do like it much better when they’re truncated somehow – maybe limited to 6 months and then a link for a page with all months on them. it makes things a little easier.

  4. Tag-based archives navigation is faulty because tags are the author’s choice for defining the content, not the reader’s. I may remember this article you wrote about “design” but you tagged it as “usability.” I’ll probably have a hard time finding it.

Searching at least allows me to see articles that contain words that I have chosen.

I personally like the combination of just straight up listing articles in descending date order, preferably broken up into small month-sized chunks — * gasp * not unlike my own site archives. At least it exposes all the article titles, and I find that many times I re-find content based on what I remember being posted at or around the same time.

  5. Can’t you just create a date archive elsewhere and provide a link to it?
