(Add or) Remove Programs

Raise your hand if you’ve ever double-clicked on that little “Add or Remove Programs” icon with the intention of adding a program.

I think I’ve used it to add components in Windows itself, but not a new application. I wonder how it differs from just running the installer that came with your software disc or download.
